Is anybody else on lifelong medication for herpes? I take Aciclovir 400mg 2 times a day.
Due to frequent outbreaks my GP has put me on this medication for 6 months to start off with. Is anybody else on this?
It's understandable to want to know you're not alone, especially when outbreaks have been frequent and disruptive. Many people take daily suppressive medication for herpes, and it's a well-established approach. Aciclovir 400 mg twice daily is one of the standard suppressive regimens, and some people continue it for months or years. Long-term use has generally been found to be well tolerated in studies. Whether you stay on it long-term may depend on how often outbreaks occur, how they affect you, and how you respond to treatment. Your GP may review the plan periodically rather than treating six months as a fixed endpoint, and some people find outbreaks become less frequent over time, though this varies. Please keep taking your medication as prescribed, and speak with your GP or a sexual health clinic about any side effects, how long you may need treatment, or whether any monitoring is recommended for you. Many people find this condition very manageable with the right support, and asking these questions is a sensible step.
