Is there anything I can do to make this right? Am I wrong for not knowing?
I was in a relationship for 2 years and never mentioned having hsv 1 on my genitals because 1. I havent had it in 8 years and 2. When I was diagnosed, it was described to me by my doctor as oral herpes and that it would go away with treatment. I took that to mean it would only remain as oral herpes. I didn’t know it would/could come back on my genitals and i had my second ever outbreak last week. Now my relationship ended after two years of hard work and what I thought to be my person. He ghosted me and disappeared. I don’t blame him. But I am beyond depressed and just want everything to end. Wtf do I even do now
I'm really sorry you're going through this. Losing a relationship you invested two years in, while facing a new outbreak and feeling this low, is a lot to carry. Wanting everything to end is a sign of how overwhelmed you are right now, and you deserve support. If you feel you might act on those thoughts, please call or text 988 (in the US) or your local emergency number now, and reach out to someone you trust to be with you.
Not knowing that HSV-1 can sometimes appear on the genitals isn't a moral failing. Oral HSV-1 can be associated with genital outbreaks, though recurrences are often less frequent and milder over time. A healthcare provider can explain what your diagnosis may mean for you and discuss whether episodic or suppressive antiviral treatment may help. Please book an appointment soon, and sooner if sores persist or you develop fever or feel unwell.
Many people with herpes live full, healthy lives, and support from a doctor, a counselor, and people who care about you can make this feel more manageable.
