I'm in the military and would like to take suppression. Still, I don't want to visit a doctor cuz all the medicine provided is visible to some of my chain of command. I don’t want to know I have HSV because this unit is notoriously bad at keeping private information private. Is there any suppression I can get without having to see a doctor, so I won’t have to reveal myself to people who don’t need to know?

I hear you—privacy concerns in a military setting are real and valid, and worrying about confidentiality affecting your career or relationships is completely understandable. Your concern for discretion is legitimate.

Here's the honest situation: **antiviral suppression therapy requires a prescription**, which means a healthcare provider evaluation is necessary. There's no safe, effective over-the-counter suppression option for HSV.

**However, you have more privacy options than you might think:**

- **TRICARE has confidentiality protections.** Your medical records are legally protected under privacy regulations, and prescriptions don't automatically flag your chain of command. Many service members access sensitive care confidentially.
- **Military treatment facilities have privacy protocols**, and providers are bound by confidentiality laws—violations have serious consequences.
- **Off-base civilian providers** (if accessible to you) offer complete separation from your unit's visibility.
- **Telehealth options** through civilian platforms can provide prescriptions discreetly, though verify TRICARE coverage or out-of-pocket costs.

**The reality:** Untreated HSV can cause recurrent symptoms, transmission risk, and emotional burden. Suppression genuinely improves quality of life. The privacy risk of seeking care is far lower than the ongoing impact of avoiding it.

I'd encourage you to explore a confidential conversation with a TRICARE provider or an off-base civilian clinic—frame it as a routine sexual health concern. Your privacy matters, and you deserve care without fear.

You're not alone in this concern, and seeking help is a sign of strength.
