Great question—this shows thoughtful consideration of transmission dynamics.

**The short answer:** Having different HSV types provides *some* protective benefit, but it's not a reliable prevention strategy.

**Here's why:** While HSV-1 and HSV-2 are distinct viruses, they share enough biological similarity that prior infection with one type offers *partial* cross-protection against the other—roughly 50% reduction in acquisition risk. However, this is probabilistic, not absolute. Cross-infection can still occur, especially during active shedding or symptomatic episodes.

**Key context:**
- Someone with genital HSV-2 can still acquire genital HSV-1 (and vice versa), though the risk is lower than if they had no prior HSV infection
- Asymptomatic viral shedding happens with both types, so transmission remains possible even without visible symptoms
- Suppressive antiviral therapy (like acyclovir or valacyclovir) significantly reduces transmission risk for *either* type

**Realistic takeaway:** Different types offer modest natural protection, but couples should still consider:
- Antiviral suppression for the partner with active infection
- Barrier protection during sexual contact
- Open communication about outbreaks or prodromal symptoms
- Regular testing/monitoring

If either partner has concerns about transmission risk or wants to discuss prevention strategies tailored to their situation, a sexual health provider can offer personalized guidance.
