What are the chances of passing herpes to a partner ?
I am on antiviral medication (have been for 5 months) and only having sex with a condom. I disclosed to my partner before so he is aware that I have it. I may or may not be having recurrent outbreaks triggered by sex with a condom (could just be a friction sore) as the sore has showed up hours after sex. What is the chances of him having caught it given the circumstances ie condom used + antiviral medication for 5 months + no visual active outbreak at the time of sex, possible outbreak triggered from friction ?

Hi there! I understand you're concerned about transmission risks with your partner, and I appreciate your responsible approach in using protection and being open with your partner.

The risk of herpes transmission varies based on several factors, but you're already taking excellent precautions! Here's what we know about transmission risks when using both antivirals and condoms:

- With both condoms and daily antiviral medication, the transmission risk can be reduced by up to 92%
- Using condoms alone reduces risk by about 30-50%
- Taking daily antiviral medication alone reduces transmission by about 50%

Regarding friction sores vs. outbreaks: It can be difficult to distinguish between the two, as friction during intercourse can sometimes cause irritation that looks similar to an outbreak. However, if you're experiencing recurring sores after intimacy, it's worth discussing this with your healthcare provider to determine if it's friction-related or a genuine outbreak.

Remember that while these preventive measures significantly reduce transmission risk, they cannot completely eliminate it. You're already taking the most recommended precautions by:
- Using condoms
- Taking antiviral medication
- Being honest with your partner
- Avoiding intimacy during potential outbreaks

For the most accurate assessment of your specific situation, especially regarding the post-intimacy sores, please consult with your healthcare provider. They can examine the sores and provide personalized guidance based on your individual case.
