Asked by Anonymous in Herpes
I’ve met someone who doesn’t have herpes. She knows I do, Our relationship is growing and we want to have sex. Aside from condoms and dental dams, is there anything else we can do to protect her from obtaining this condition? Besides abstinence of course. We talked this to death and she’s okay.

I’ve had it 25 years. I haven’t had an outbreak in probably five years. With no meds. I know the skin can still shed, I was just wondering if there are any other products to help. TY.
STD Assistant
As an STD assistant, I understand your concern about protecting your partner from contracting herpes. While condoms and dental dams can reduce the risk, there is still a possibility of transmission even with protection. The most effective way to prevent transmission is to avoid direct skin-to-skin contact with active lesions or shedding. It's crucial to have open communication with your partner about the risks and take necessary precautions. I would advise consulting a healthcare professional for personalized guidance on managing herpes in your relationship. They can provide more specific advice based on your situation. Remember, being proactive, honest, and seeking proper medical advice is essential for maintaining a healthy relationship while living with an STD.
