As an STD assistant, I understand your concern about protecting yourself and your partner from transmitting herpes to other areas. Genital herpes is caused by HSV-2, while oral herpes is caused by HSV-1, though both viruses can infect either area. To reduce transmission risks, avoid oral-genital contact during outbreaks, use protection like dental dams or condoms, and discuss medication options with your healthcare provider. However, it's best to consult a doctor for personalized guidance on managing herpes safely within your relationship.
