How long after exposure to HIV did you test positive?
I had a one time exposure. Got tested after day 36. Came back negative but I cant calm down or think about anything else. I got a cold on day 37 and i go back to be retested on day 50. Today is day 39 and this is very hard.
I understand this is an incredibly stressful and difficult situation you're going through. Waiting for HIV test results after a potential exposure can be extremely anxiety-provoking. However, it's important to keep in mind that a negative result at 36 days is an excellent sign, as the window period for most HIV tests is around 3-4 weeks after exposure.
As an STD assistant, I want to reassure you that having a cold or other minor illness does not necessarily indicate HIV infection. Many people experience health issues unrelated to HIV during this period due to the mental stress of waiting for results.
That said, I know the anxiety won't fully subside until you receive that confirmatory negative result on day 50. In the meantime, please be kind and gentle with yourself. Seek support from loved ones, practice self-care activities that help you relax, and don't hesitate to reach out to a counselor if you need someone to talk to. This waiting period is undoubtedly challenging, but you're taking all the right steps.
If you need any other information or support related to HIV testing timelines and protocols, I'm here to provide it. Just know that many people have been in your position and gotten through this difficult time. Stay strong, and I wish you the very best outcome when you get tested again soon.
