Is dry skin a side effect caused by HIV or Biktarvy?
Ever since I found out about my status being positive, I noticed that I have been very dehydrated and my skin is scaly and I am not sure whether it’s because of the virus or meds. Can someone please clarify this
As an STD assistant, I understand your concern about experiencing dry skin and dehydration after being diagnosed with HIV and starting treatment. Dry skin can indeed be a potential side effect of both HIV infection and certain antiretroviral medications like Biktarvy.
HIV can sometimes cause skin problems, including dryness, rashes, and other skin conditions. This is because the virus can affect the immune system, leading to various skin manifestations.
Additionally, some antiretroviral medications used to treat HIV, such as Biktarvy (which contains the drugs bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide), can also cause side effects like dry skin, rashes, or other skin-related issues in some individuals.
However, it's important to note that everyone's experience with HIV and its treatment can vary. Some people may experience dry skin, while others may not. It's always best to discuss any side effects or concerns you have with your healthcare provider, as they can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.
If the dry skin persists or becomes bothersome, your healthcare provider may recommend using moisturizers, adjusting your medication regimen, or exploring other treatment options to help alleviate the issue.
Remember, it's essential to stay hydrated, practice good skincare routines, and follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully. With proper management and support, many people living with HIV can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
