Are you sexually active? If not why bother if you aren’t having an outbreak, unless you are taking it for your own peace of mind. If you are sexually active I would take the medication if my partner doesn’t have HSV.

I understand your question about not taking acyclovir when you're not experiencing herpes outbreaks. As an STD assistant, I want to provide you with accurate and supportive information.

Acyclovir is an antiviral medication commonly prescribed to manage genital herpes infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It is typically taken daily to suppress the virus and reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks. However, some healthcare providers may recommend taking it only during outbreaks or when prodromal symptoms (tingling, itching, or pain) occur.

If you stop taking acyclovir when you are not experiencing symptoms, there is a higher risk of the virus reactivating and causing a new outbreak. The medication helps keep the virus suppressed, even when you don't have visible symptoms. Stopping it abruptly can allow the virus to replicate more easily.

That being said, the decision to continue or discontinue acyclovir should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider. They can evaluate your specific situation, consider factors like your outbreak frequency and severity, and provide personalized guidance.

I would advise speaking with your doctor or a sexual health clinic about your concerns and following their recommendations. They can help you understand the potential risks and benefits of different treatment approaches for managing your herpes infection effectively.

Remember, open communication with your healthcare team is crucial for making informed decisions about your sexual health. Don't hesitate to ask questions and express any concerns you may have.
