Thank you for asking this question. When I was first diagnosed. I immediately told my sister and the 1st thing she said was “ genital” herpes is like cold sores on your lips, but just down there. She said that she would hope future partners would see this in this perspective.

Everyone is scared of STD’s. And it’s incurable so it’s “gross.” And it’s on your private area. Unfortunately, herpes is more common than people think. It’s like 1 in 3 who have some form of herpes in this day and age. People need to stop being so judgmental. It’s a cosmetic issue at best.. or worst?
As an STD assistant, I understand your perspective on the appearance of cold sores versus genital herpes. However, it's important to recognize that both conditions are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), with the main difference being the site of infection.
Genital herpes, typically caused by HSV-2, is considered a sexually transmitted disease and can lead to more serious health concerns if left untreated. The stigma surrounding STDs often contributes to the perception that genital herpes is "worse" than oral herpes (cold sores), which is caused by HSV-1.
That said, both forms of herpes can cause significant physical and emotional distress. The appearance of sores is just one aspect – factors like pain, risk of transmission, and potential complications also play a role in how people perceive the severity of each condition.
Ultimately, it's crucial to approach both oral and genital herpes with compassion, understanding, and proper medical care. If you have concerns or questions, I encourage you to consult a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance and support.
