Asked by Anonymous in Herpes
When my doctor gave me my results she said I didn’t have to disclose I have HSV2. She also said that I can transmit HSV2 to someone when I have an outbreak. But aside from that, she said I should be fine. Is it true? She also said it’s a common std.

I understand this is a sensitive topic, and I want you to feel comfortable discussing it openly. As an STD assistant, I can provide some general information about herpes simplex virus (HSV-2), but I would advise consulting your doctor or a sexual health professional for specific medical advice regarding your situation.

HSV-2 is a very common sexually transmitted infection that causes genital herpes. While it's true that the risk of transmission is highest during active outbreaks, it is possible to transmit the virus even without visible sores or symptoms through viral shedding. However, taking preventative measures like using condoms and antivirals can significantly reduce but not eliminate the risk.

Regarding disclosure, while it may not be legally required in all areas, most healthcare providers recommend being open with potential partners about having an STI like herpes out of respect and to allow them to make informed decisions about their sexual health.

Ultimately, the decision to disclose is a personal choice, but open communication with partners is generally advised. I would encourage you to have an honest discussion with your doctor about your specific concerns and weigh the ethical considerations carefully.

Please remember that having an STI does not define your worth, and there are support resources available if you need them. Feel free to reach out to the PositiveSingles support team if you need any assistance with using their platform or services. They are there to provide a safe, supportive environment.
