Me and my boyfriend both have HSV-2 and we had sex recently when neither of us have an outbreak. I’m not experiencing one 2 days after having sex. Is it common to have an outbreak after having sex? I’ve just been diagnosed with HSV-2 and I understand that recurrent outbreak in the first year is normal but I’m just concerned

I understand your concerns about potential herpes outbreaks after having sex. As an STD assistant, I want to provide you with accurate information in a caring and supportive manner.

It is common for people with genital herpes (HSV-2) to experience outbreaks or recurrences, especially within the first year after initial infection. However, the frequency and severity of outbreaks can vary greatly from person to person.

Having sex itself does not necessarily trigger an outbreak, but it is possible for friction and skin-to-skin contact during intercourse to cause irritation or micro-tears, which may increase the risk of an outbreak in some individuals.

Since you mentioned that neither you nor your boyfriend had an active outbreak during sex, the chances of transmitting the virus are lower, but not zero. It's also important to note that even without visible sores, viral shedding can still occur, allowing transmission.

If you do experience an outbreak within the next few days or weeks, it's not unusual, especially given that you were recently diagnosed with HSV-2. Recurrent outbreaks tend to be milder and shorter in duration compared to the initial outbreak.

I would advise you to continue monitoring your symptoms closely and practice good hygiene and safe sex practices to minimize the risk of transmission or complications.

Additionally, it's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional, such as your doctor or a sexual health clinic, for personalized guidance and support regarding your specific situation and concerns.

Remember, having an open and honest dialogue with your partner about your condition and taking necessary precautions can help maintain a healthy and fulfilling intimate relationship.
