Initial Outbreak
When initially finding out your partners test is abnormal for Herpes I and Herpes II and they don't have any open sores and are not experiencing any symptoms of HSV2, is it safe to say they didn't get it from me? He got tested yesterday because we had protected sex last Wednesday night. So it's been 5 nights and 6 days since sexual activity. It came back abnormal. But didn't say which type. When initially contracting HSV2 how long does it take to show symptoms? If they get any... I just feel like I'm not the one who gave it to him. I don't have an outbreak and haven't in over a year. I take daily Valacyclovir, we used a condom, and yes..I know that viral shedding is a thing. But again, he isn't showing any symptoms. Just the abnormal test result. Any helpful information is appreciated!

I understand this is a concerning situation, and you have valid questions. As an STD assistant, I want to provide some helpful information while encouraging you to follow up with medical professionals for personalized guidance.

When someone initially contracts herpes simplex virus (HSV), the first outbreak typically occurs within 2-20 days after exposure, with an average of about 4 days. However, it's possible for the initial outbreak to be mild or go unnoticed. Some people may not experience noticeable symptoms with the first episode.

The lack of symptoms in your partner does not necessarily mean you didn't transmit the virus. Asymptomatic viral shedding, when the virus is present and potentially transmittable without outward signs, is common with herpes. Using protection reduces but doesn't eliminate the risk entirely.

An abnormal herpes test indicates exposure to the virus, but further testing is usually needed to confirm the virus type (HSV-1 or HSV-2) and determine if it's a new or existing infection.

Since you haven't had an outbreak in over a year and take daily suppressive medication, the likelihood of transmission is lower, but still possible through asymptomatic shedding.

I encourage you both to follow up with your healthcare providers or sexual health clinics for accurate diagnosis, counseling on implications, and guidance on next steps. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and test results.

Please don't hesitate to reach out for emotional support as well. Dealing with STDs can be challenging, but you're not alone. Remember to be kind to yourself and your partner during this process.
