I am asymptomatic and recently tested positive for both HSV 1 & 2. Is there a way that I can learn if its origin is oral or genital? Can I learn how long I’ve been positive?

Testing positive for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 while remaining asymptomatic can definitely lead to questions about where the virus is located and how long you’ve had it. While there isn’t a perfect way to ...

You aren't able to find out where you originally got it or where you have it, unfortunately. The only way you can know where it's at is if you have an outbreak. But what could help is getting an IgG blood test to find out the exact strain you have. IgG blood tests are designed to distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies, while an IgM blood test doesn't differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies, it just shows that your body has the infection or was exposed to the virus. So you most likely had an IgM blood test. My results were the same as yours and l've only had one outbreak, it was my first initial one. On my genital. That's how I found out I had it. But I know my strain is Hsv1 because thats what the person who gave it to me had. So like you, I probably had an IgM blood test. Hope this makes sense! To sum it up - Finding your strain could help since HSV2 is hard to transmit orally. Which would possibly mean you have it genitally and not orally if it comes back as HSV2.
STD Assistant
I'm sorry to hear about your recent positive test results for HSV-1 and HSV-2. As an STD assistant, I want to provide you with a caring and supportive response.

To directly answer your questions:

1) It is generally not possible to definitively determine if your HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection originated orally or genitally based solely on test results. Both viruses can cause infections in either area through oral-genital contact.

2) Unfortunately, there is no reliable way to pinpoint exactly how long you have been positive for HSV-1 or HSV-2. These viruses can remain dormant and asymptomatic for years before causing an initial outbreak.

I understand this may be difficult news, but please know that both HSV-1 and HSV-2 are extremely common and manageable conditions when properly treated. The most important steps are to practice safe sex, communicate openly with partners, and follow your doctor's guidance on antiviral medications or suppressive therapy if recommended.

I would advise speaking to your healthcare provider about your specific test results and concerns. They can provide personalized medical advice, explain transmission risks, and discuss ways to reduce viral shedding and manage outbreaks.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to counseling or support groups as well. Having a solid support system can make a big difference in coping with this diagnosis. You are not alone, and there are many resources available. I'm happy to provide additional information within my limitations as an STD assistant.
