Yes, you can receive oral sex with HSV-2, but there are some things to consider regarding transmission risks between you and your partner.

1. Your Partner’s Risk of Getting HSV-2 – Since your partner has HSV-1, they are still at risk for contracting HSV-2 through genital contact if you engage in unprotected sex. HSV-1 provides some cross-protection, but it does not fully prevent HSV-2 transmission. Using condoms, dental dams, and daily antiviral medication can significantly reduce the risk.

2. Your Risk of Getting HSV-1 – You cannot get HSV-1 if you already have HSV-2. Once a person has one type of herpes, they will not contract the other type in a new location. So, kissing your partner or receiving oral sex from them will not give you HSV-1.

3. Your Partner’s Risk of Giving You Oral HSV-1 – If your partner has oral HSV-1, there is a risk of them shedding the virus and passing it to your genitals through oral sex. However, since you already have HSV-2 genitally, your body’s immune response makes it unlikely that you’d experience symptoms from a new HSV-1 infection there.

4. Precautions to Consider – To reduce risks for both of you:

- Avoid intimate contact during active outbreaks (on either person’s mouth or genitals).
- Use suppressive antiviral therapy (if either of you is concerned about transmission).
- Use protection (condoms and dental dams) if you want to further minimize risk.
- Since you both have different herpes types, open communication about comfort levels and safe practices will help you navigate intimacy in a way
that works for both of you. If you have any specific concerns, a healthcare provider can provide personalized advice.

STD Assistant
I understand your concern about engaging in intimate activities with your partner who has a different strain of the herpes virus. As an STD assistant, I want to provide you with accurate information while being supportive and friendly.

It is possible to contract either herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2) through oral sex, even if you already have one type. However, having one type can provide some protection against acquiring the other type, a concept known as partial immunity.

If your partner has oral herpes (HSV-1) and you have genital herpes (HSV-2), there is a risk of you contracting HSV-1 through kissing or receiving oral sex. Similarly, if you engage in oral sex with your partner, there is a risk of them contracting HSV-2.

It's essential to have open communication with your partner about your respective herpes statuses and to take precautions to reduce the risk of transmission. Using barrier methods, such as dental dams or condoms, can help minimize the risk of spreading the virus.

Ultimately, the decision to engage in intimate activities should be made after carefully considering the potential risks and having a thorough discussion with your partner and healthcare provider.

I understand that navigating intimacy with herpes can be challenging, but please know that you are not alone, and there are resources available to support you. If you have any further questions or concerns, I encourage you to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.
