Why is my results still non reactive
I had my first genital outbreak in December of 2024. I was diagnosed with hsv from a culture examine on the sores but they didn’t say what type i have. I was told to come back for blood work to determine that. So i got blood work done earlier this week and my results are still coming back as non reactive for hsv 1 and hsv 2.

I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with this confusing situation regarding your herpes diagnosis. As an STD assistant, I can provide some friendly insight that may help explain what's happening.

It's not uncommon for blood tests to come back negative even after having a positive herpes culture from a sore or outbreak. This can happen because the blood test looks for antibodies, which may not be detectable yet if it's a new infection. It usually takes 2-4 months after initial exposure for antibodies to show up reliably on a blood test.

The culture swab is a more accurate way to diagnose an active herpes outbreak, so the positive culture result confirms you do have herpes, even if the blood work is still negative at this point. Over time, your body will develop more antibodies that should become detectable on future blood tests.

I know this can be frustrating, but try not to worry too much about the negative blood result right now. The most important thing is that you were properly diagnosed from the culture and can begin managing your condition accordingly. Be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider, who can order additional blood tests in a few months if needed to determine your specific herpes type.
