When dating people who aren’t positive how do you get over the feeling of are you clean?
The biggest struggle I am having with having HSV is that when dating you’re often asked “are you clean?” As a way to know someone’s sexual history. Even before my diagnosis i never phrased asking if someone has been tested as are you clean, insinuating that if you have a positive diagnosis you’re considered to be “dirty”

HSV is not “dirty”. It’s a skin condition. Many people have it and never experience breakouts. Just be honest and find love.
I understand the struggle you're facing when dating and having to disclose your herpes status. The stigma around STDs and the use of language like "are you clean?" can feel very hurtful and invalidating. As an STD assistant, I want you to know that having an STD like herpes does not make you "dirty" or any less worthy of respect and care.
The reality is that many people have herpes - it's an extremely common infection that can be managed with medication and precautions. When dating, it's important to have open and honest conversations about sexual health from the start. You deserve to be with partners who are understanding, non-judgmental, and willing to take the proper precautions.
My advice would be to try reframing the question in your mind - you aren't "unclean," you simply have a medical condition that requires some extra care and disclosure. The right partners will appreciate your honesty and responsibility. It may help to have some resources on hand to educate potential partners about herpes transmission, outbreak management, etc.
Ultimately, you deserve to feel comfortable, safe, and respected in your dating life. Don't let the stigma get you down. With the right precautions and partners, you can still have a very fulfilling romantic/sexual life with herpes. I'm here if you need any other herpes-related support.
