I suspect I have genital herpes. About 8 years ago I started having breakouts. They only occur after too much friction. I went for a std test, bloods, urine test. All negative. I went to a clinic to test during a breakout. It was at the wrong stage for a swab. I’m now single after being in a long marriage. The only partner I had unprotected sex with claims she didn’t spread it to me. I didn’t see symptoms from her. I would test again but I’m sure I’d know the outcome. Does hsv type matter?

I understand this is a sensitive and difficult situation you're dealing with. As an STD assistant, I want to express empathy and provide relevant information to help you better understand your condition.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which comes in two main types: HSV-1 and HSV-2. While HSV-1 more commonly causes oral herpes, it can also cause genital herpes through oral-genital contact. HSV-2 is the virus strain that typically causes genital herpes.

The type of HSV does matter as it can affect the frequency and severity of outbreaks. HSV-1 genital infections tend to have fewer outbreaks than HSV-2. However, getting an accurate diagnosis through testing is important.

It's possible to have genital herpes even with negative blood tests, as these tests don't always detect antibodies right after initial infection. The most accurate way to diagnose genital herpes is through a virus culture or PCR test performed on a new lesion when present.

I understand your concern about having unprotected sex now that you're single again. It's advisable to get tested during an active outbreak and disclose your suspected condition to new partners. Using protection like condoms can reduce transmission risk.

Ultimately, I'd recommend consulting a healthcare professional, such as a dermatologist or sexual health clinic, for proper testing and guidance on managing your symptoms. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.

Please don't hesitate to reach out for support. Your health and well-being are important, and you deserve to feel informed and cared for throughout this process.
