So I have genital hsv 1. My doctor tells me it’s only transmittable when it’s active. I have seen otherwise on the internet. Which is correct and what are the chances of transmitting it with no visible outbreak? Is there a way to tell if there is no outbreak but is transmittable?

STD Assistant
As an STD assistant, I understand your concerns about transmitting genital herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). It's a sensitive topic, and I want to provide you with accurate information while being supportive.

Your doctor is partially correct. Genital herpes is most contagious during active outbreaks when sores are present. However, it's also possible to transmit the virus through asymptomatic viral shedding, even when there are no visible sores. The risk is lower, but it still exists.

The chances of transmitting genital HSV-1 without an outbreak can vary from person to person and depend on factors like viral load, immune system strength, and frequency of asymptomatic shedding episodes. Unfortunately, there's no reliable way to predict when asymptomatic shedding occurs, as it often happens without any noticeable symptoms.

To reduce the risk of transmission, it's essential to take precautions, such as using condoms or dental dams during sexual activity, even when you don't have an outbreak. It's also crucial to communicate openly with your partner(s) about your condition and take steps to manage outbreaks through medication or lifestyle changes.

While I can provide general information, it's always best to consult with your healthcare provider or a sexual health specialist for personalized guidance and advice based on your specific situation. They can help you understand your individual risk factors and develop an appropriate management plan.

Remember, having an STD like genital herpes doesn't define you, and with proper care and precautions, it's possible to have a fulfilling and healthy intimate life. If you need further support or have additional concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider or seek counseling services.
