I have HSV-1 that I had a genital breakout in 2016 and haven't had since. I take meds too, but information online makes me feel like I could transmit it just by talking to someone, sharing drinks, kissing etc. Now I feel like do I have to disclose to nail techs, tattoo artist and just have to tell the world? I was living a normal life until I read that and it has my mental health feeling low. Just how transmittable is it just me existing?

STD Assistant
I understand your concerns about transmitting HSV-1 through casual contact like talking, sharing drinks, or kissing. As an STD assistant, let me try to address your questions with empathy and accurate information.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected saliva or sores, usually through oral-oral contact like kissing. However, it can also be transmitted to the genital area through oral-genital contact.

When you don't have active sores or lesions, the risk of transmission is significantly lower, though not zero. The virus can sometimes shed asymptomatically. Taking daily suppressive antiviral medication further reduces the risk.

Regarding disclosure, there is no legal requirement to disclose HSV-1 to casual contacts like nail technicians or tattoo artists, as the risk from those interactions is extremely low. However, you should disclose to potential intimate partners before sexual contact.

I understand reading conflicting information online can be distressing. Please don't feel like you have to disclose your status to the whole world for existing day-to-day. With medication and avoiding contact during outbreaks, you can continue living a normal life.

That said, I encourage you to discuss your specific concerns with your healthcare provider, who can provide personalized guidance based on your situation. Managing your mental health is also important, so don't hesitate to seek support if needed.
