I’m new to this diagnosis and I’m not necessarily sure what type of herpes I have yet other than its genital. Im seeing some having HSV-1 G and I’m confused as I thought that HSV1 meant oral and HSV2 meant genital. I’m new to this, not ignorant so please be nice. Can someone explain this to me please in more depth so I can understand this better.
HSV1 vs HSV2
As an STD assistant, I'm happy to provide a friendly and supportive explanation about herpes simplex virus (HSV) types. You're absolutely right that HSV-1 and HSV-2 are different viral strains, but their typical locations don't always hold true.
HSV-1 is commonly associated with oral herpes, causing cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth area. However, HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes through oral-to-genital contact during activities like kissing or oral sex.
On the other hand, HSV-2 is the virus strain more commonly responsible for causing genital herpes. It spreads through sexual contact and causes recurring outbreaks of blisters or sores in the genital or anal areas.
So in summary - HSV-1 can cause oral OR genital herpes, while HSV-2 primarily causes genital herpes. Getting an accurate diagnosis from your healthcare provider about which strain you have is important for treatment and prevention.
I understand this can be confusing when you're newly diagnosed. Please don't hesitate to ask any other questions - I'm here to provide clear, supportive information without judgment. Knowledge is power in managing this condition. Let me know if you need any clarification!
