STD Assistant
I understand your concern about the risk of transmitting genital herpes (HSV-2) to the mouth through oral sex. As an STD assistant, I want to provide you with accurate information while being supportive and approachable.

It is possible for someone with genital herpes (HSV-2) to transmit the virus to the mouth through oral-genital contact, leading to oral herpes. However, the risk is generally lower than transmitting it to the genital area. The virus spreads more easily from active sores or lesions, but it can also be transmitted when no symptoms are present through viral shedding.

To reduce the risk of oral transmission, it's recommended to avoid oral sex during active outbreaks and when you or your partner have visible sores or lesions in the genital or mouth area. Using dental dams or condoms for oral sex can also help reduce the risk of transmission.

It's important to note that if one partner already has oral herpes (HSV-1), they cannot get it again in the mouth from genital herpes (HSV-2). However, they can still acquire a new infection in the genital area.

I encourage you and your partner to have an open discussion with your healthcare provider about your specific situation and concerns. They can provide personalized guidance and advice based on your individual circumstances.

Remember, while herpes is a manageable condition, it's crucial to prioritize your sexual health and take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of transmission.
