Can HSV1 cause high AST levels?
I recently got routine bloodwork done. My AST levels showed a level of 134 when normal is between 5-37 which is critically high. Is this normal when taking PreP or valtrex? Or having hsv?

STD Assistant
I'm sorry to hear that your recent bloodwork showed an elevated AST level. As an STD assistant, I can provide some general information about herpes and liver enzymes, but I would strongly recommend consulting with your healthcare provider for personalized medical advice regarding your specific situation.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, whether HSV-1 or HSV-2, do not typically cause elevated AST levels on their own. AST, or aspartate aminotransferase, is an enzyme primarily found in the liver and heart muscles. Elevated AST levels can indicate liver injury or disease, but there are many potential causes beyond viral infections.

Medications like Truvada (for PrEP) and valacyclovir (Valtrex, for herpes treatment) are generally well-tolerated, but they can potentially cause elevated liver enzymes in some cases, especially if there are other underlying liver issues or drug interactions.

It's crucial to discuss your test results and any symptoms you may be experiencing with your doctor or a hepatologist (liver specialist). They can order additional tests, review your medical history and current medications, and determine the underlying cause of your elevated AST level.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for proper evaluation and guidance. They will be able to provide you with personalized advice and an appropriate treatment plan, if needed.
