Is a false positive swab test possible?
I went to the clinic to have a small red spot checked on my genitals. The consultant said it was definitely not herpes and was more likely an ingrown hair but swabbed it anyway and it came back positive for HSV2. Never had an outbreak or any other symptoms. The spot disappeared after a few days, no blister, pussing, or scabbing. How can i get confirmation?

Yes, it is possible to have a false positive result in herpes swab tests. False positives can occur due to various reasons such as contamination during sampling or testing errors. Since you did not experience typical symptoms of HSV2 like blisters and scabs, seeking confirmation through additional testing may be advisable.

To confirm the diagnosis, you could consider getting a blood test for herpes antibodies (specifically IgG) which can help determine if your body has developed an immune response to the virus indicating past exposure or infection with HSV2. It's important to discuss this further with your healthcare provider who can guide you on appropriate follow-up steps based on your specific situation.

Remember that accurate diagnosis and understanding are vital aspects when dealing with sexually transmitted infections like herpes. If needed, consulting a healthcare professional knowledgeable about STIs would provide comprehensive guidance tailored specifically to your health needs.
