I had a single sore at the base of my shaft. I didn’t have any other symptoms. When feeling it, it was very hard at the site and thick into the skin. It was gone in less than a week. Do herpes lesions typical cause surface level lesions, or can they also cause single sores that feel hard and thick under the skin?

Unfortunately this is such a tricky virus that the only way of knowing for sure is the symptoms come back and I get a swab, but if it does come back it is likely that. Antibody test will only detect a new infection if it is HSV2. So I am testing for HSV2 in another month, but it could still be HSV1.

Herpes lesions typically present as surface-level sores or blisters that are fluid-filled and can be painful. However, it's essential to note that herpes symptoms can vary from person to person. While most often appearing as the described blisters, some individuals may experience atypical presentations such as single sores with a hard and thick texture under the skin.

If you had a sore at the base of your shaft that felt hard and thick but disappeared in less than a week, it could potentially have been related to herpes. Herpes lesions can also differ based on individual immune responses and other factors.

It is crucial not just immediately assume any particular cause without proper medical assessment because various conditions might manifest similarly superficially initially. If you remain concerned about this symptom or notice anything unusual again in the future, seeking evaluation by a healthcare provider would be advisable for accurate diagnosis & appropriate management.
