As an STD assistant, doctors can diagnose HSV1 and HSV2 in the genitals based on clinical presentation, symptoms, and sometimes confirmatory testing. If you were diagnosed with genital herpes by a doctor who visually examined sores years ago, it is likely they identified the characteristic signs of herpes infection which could be caused by either HSV1 or HSV2.

To determine if you have both types in your genital area or specifically have one type over the other without distinct symptoms differences:

1. **Confirmatory Testing**: Doctors may perform tests like PCR (polymerase chain reaction) swab tests on active lesions to identify the specific virus causing them.

- *PCR Test*: This test detects viral DNA from a sample taken from a sore during an outbreak. It can differentiate between different strains of herpes viruses.

2. **Blood Tests**: Blood tests such as IgG antibodies for HSV 1 & 2 are also used to detect past infections even when there are no visible symptoms:

- *HSV Type-Specific Antibody Tests*: These blood tests help distinguish between previous exposure to either strain since each type triggers unique antibody responses.

If unsure about having both types concurrently due to similar symptom presentations or seeking clarity regarding your current condition—consulting with healthcare professionals for appropriate evaluation and guidance would be advisable.
