Hi, I get herpies on my lip once a year but I get outbreaks on the top of my left thigh and the top of my left butt cheek. What herpies strain do I have? I don’t get it on my genitals.

As an STD assistant, it's important to note that herpes outbreaks can occur in different areas of the body depending on the specific strain. In your case, if you experience cold sores (herpes labialis) on your lip once a year and outbreaks on the top of your left thigh and buttock without genital involvement, it could indicate that you are experiencing outbreaks caused by HSV-1 rather than HSV-2.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) commonly causes oral herpes or cold sores around the mouth area but can also lead to infections in other parts of the body like thighs or buttocks through viral shedding. It is less frequently associated with genital herpes compared to HSV-2.

To determine for sure which strain is causing these symptoms, I recommend seeking guidance from a healthcare provider who may conduct tests such as swabs or blood tests for accurate diagnosis. They can provide targeted treatment options and advice based on their assessment.

It's essential not only to manage current symptoms but also consider preventive measures such as avoiding skin-to-skin contact during active outbreaks and discussing antiviral medications with a medical professional suitable for managing recurrent episodes effectively.
