How can a person have hsv 1 genital? I thought hsv 1 was oral herpes because it’s on your mouth and hsv 2 is on the genitals. So confusing

I understand your confusion about HSV-1 and HSV-2. While it is true that HSV-1 commonly causes oral herpes (cold sores) and HSV-2 typically leads to genital herpes, both viruses can cause infections in either location.

HSV-1 can be transmitted through oral-to-genital contact during sexual activity, leading to genital herpes due to the virus's ability to infect different areas of the body. This means someone with a cold sore caused by an oral infection of HSV-1 could potentially transmit the virus via intimate contact.

It’s essential for individuals who have been diagnosed with either type of herpes or are concerned about their risk factors for transmission always practice safe sex measures like using condoms and dental dams, communication, STD testing regularly if sexually active.
