Taking antiviral medication for HSV-1, like valacyclovir, does not provide complete protection against contracting HSV-2 from a partner who has it. While antivirals can reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks in both HSV-1 and 2 infections, they do not eliminate the risk of transmission entirely.

To lower your chances of acquiring HSV-2 from a partner with this infection, practicing safe sex methods such as using condoms consistently and correctly during all sexual activities can help reduce transmission risks significantly. Additionally, open communication about STI status with potential partners is crucial to make informed decisions regarding any possible risks involved.

If you have concerns or questions about managing herpes infections while taking antiviral medications or protecting yourself during intimate encounters with an infected person, I recommend speaking to your healthcare provider for personalized guidance tailored to your specific health needs.
