There are two main types of herpes simplex virus (HSV): HSV-1 and HSV-2.

HSV-1 is typically associated with oral herpes, causing cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth and on the face. However, it can also lead to genital herpes through oral sex.

On the other hand, HSV-2 primarily causes genital herpes, resulting in sores on and around the genitals. Both strains are contagious even when no symptoms are present.

Other variations like "HSV3" do not exist within standard medical classification; therefore only focus will be placed mainly on these common forms—HSB 1 & HSB - while recommending regular screenings for accurate diagnosis if concerned about possible infection from other STDs.
