It's important for an individual who is sexually active to get tested for STDs. A syphilis test should be done during a regular STD test. According to the Center for Disease Control, "Genital sores (chancres caused by syphilis make it easier to transmit and acquire HIV infection sexually". An individual with syphilis is 2-5 times more likely to catch or give a partner HIV. HIV more easily enters the body through active syphilis sores.

Syphilis can be easily cured during the primary stage or shortly after the initial infection.
